The New York Islanders look to shake off their ugly start to the season as they head into California to face off with the Anaheim Ducks.
The Islanders haven’t quite had the start to the season that many people anticipated as they are a modest 5-8-4 so far and haven’t looked like the playoff team from a year ago and need to pick things up in a hurry. The Isles did lose some pieces to free agency in the offseason but they do still have a potent offense led by John Tavares and a blue line that is above average all playing in front of Jaroslav Halak who had a very good showing at the World Cup of Hockey but has been off to start the year and as such his team has struggled. Halak is expected to get the start as he will face off against John Gibson who has settled in nicely to his first season as the team’s starting goalie.
The Ducks meanwhile have shaken off their slow start and are now two games above the .500 mark and starting to generate some steam, and as such they are big time favourites at home here against the slumping Islanders. Anaheim to fell victim to a couple of guys leaving via free agency and took some time to get some key pieces back into their lineup through contract disputes but now they are back on track and look like a team capable of going on a run in the Pacific division. Anaheim is usually a very good team when playing at the Honda Center and tonight they stand to be in great shape against New York.
The Isles are 0-7 in their last seven road games and 7-3 in their last 10 against the Pacific while the Ducks are 4-1 in their last five home games and 6-1 in their last seven when their opponent scores two goals or less in their previous game. The line here is too chalky but Anaheim should win and get it done in regulation.
